It's not my only takeaway from this trip, but it is something I'll remember always about Italy: there's no quaint corner of the world that rich people can't come along and wreck.

Sunrise on Lake Maggiore |
We travelled today to Lake Como and the lovely little town nestled on its shores. This is just one of the spots in Italy that George Clooney has taken a shine to, has purchased property in, and ruined for everyone else.

Dessert set for 50 - blue glass and sterling silver |
But before we went to Como, and before there was Clooney, there was the Borromeo family, related to the Medici, who put their "summer cottage" - a massive palace - on an island in Lake Maggiore. We visited there first today.
The family - who still stays the summer months in the palace - lets tourists roam the ground floor, including the grand entrance with a forty foot ceiling, frescos, Murano chandeliers and reminders of the ironic family motto - humilitas - everywhere.

Upside down humility |
A tour of Lake Como and the lovely villas along its shores was a lot like "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous."
For dinner, we went to a restaurant in a grand old tower that turned out, in fact, to be a play house for the Borromeo children.
Thanks for reading!
